Build maths literacy and confidence with exam command words using this Level 1 Foundation Match-Up pack. It includes 10 activities, 100 command-word-and-definition matches, complete solutions and an accompanying PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.

Many pupils lose marks not because they cannot do the mathematics, but because they misunderstand what a question is asking them to do. This resource explicitly teaches the language of maths questions, helping pupils recognise the difference between commands such as describe, explain, justify, calculate and estimate.

Each activity contains 10 lettered command words and 10 numbered definitions. Pupils read carefully and match each word to its precise meaning, developing literacy, retrieval, reasoning and examination confidence.

Command words included

Simplify, describe, work out, calculate, compare, solve, construct, determine, list, mark, interpret, find, estimate, draw, justify, measure, why, explain, derive, label, use and translate.

The words are revisited across different activities to provide purposeful retrieval practice and help pupils distinguish between similar instructions. For example, pupils learn the difference between calculate and work out, describe and explain, and find and determine.

The accompanying PowerPoint allows the activities to be displayed, discussed and completed with the whole class. Printable PDF worksheets and full solution pages are included for independent work, self-assessment or quick teacher marking.
