A Key Stage 1 geography lesson for Year 1 and Year 2 where pupils explore what they like and dislike about their local area and suggest simple improvements for the future. Children record ideas using differentiated worksheets and discuss how communities can change over time. Supports KS1 human geography and local area objectives.

What’s Included:
✔ Lesson plan
✔ PowerPoint presentation
✔ 3 worksheets (Likes and Dislikes, Making Changes, Looking to the Future)
✔ 3 WAGOLL exemplars (one for each worksheet)
✔ Word bank of key vocabulary
✔ Teacher guidance

Lesson Overview:
★ Starter: Introduce the idea that people experience their local area differently. Discuss examples of likes (e.g., parks, green spaces) and dislikes (e.g., busy roads, litter). Explore how communities can improve places over time.
★ Main: Pupils complete differentiated worksheets by drawing or writing two likes, two dislikes, and one improvement they would like to see. Middle‑ability pupils explain their reasons; higher‑ability pupils describe how their improvement would help the community and design a symbol for it.
★ Plenary: Hold a class vote to choose the top three improvements. Discuss how these changes could happen and imagine what the area might look like in ten years.

Why It’s Useful:
✔ Supports KS1 geography objectives on local area and human features
✔ Encourages reflection, reasoning and simple problem‑solving
✔ Differentiated for mixed‑ability classes with clear scaffolding
✔ Fully resourced for a 30–60 minute lesson
✔ Printable and easy to use in class or on a local walk
