A community resource designed for KS1 and MFL . This resource links with shopping, buildings, jobs, the local community and where we live, while supporting key literacy skills including speaking and listening, reading and writing.
The activities can be used as part of a topic, an MFL unit, or alongside a walk around the local community, where children can look at the different shops and buildings they see, discuss what they sell and identify the people who work there.
Pages 1–6 – Shop activities
• Colour shop scenes showing rows of shops for children to observe, discuss and compare.
• Colour shop flashcards to cut out and use in a variety of ways. Duplicate sets can be printed for matching and memory games, sorting activities, speaking tasks or classroom displays.
• Black-and-white shop pictures for children to colour.
• Shop drawing activities where children complete a row of buildings by drawing the missing shops. They can copy existing shops or design and name shops of their own.
• A page containing 10 empty shop fronts for children to create their own shops, adding names, signs, products and details.
Pages 7–16 – Shop comprehension activities
Each page focuses on an individual shop and includes a colourful shop illustration with simple comprehension and observation questions. Children answer questions such as:
What is the name of the shop? What does the shop sell?
The resource works well for MFL teaching, as the shop pictures provide clear visual prompts for introducing and revising vocabulary relating to shops, shopping, products, buildings, jobs and position words. The same activities can be adapted for oral language practice in the target language.
For KS1, the resource provides useful cross-curricular links with English, Geography and PSHE, encouraging children to talk about their own neighbourhood and the different places and people that make up a community.
