Teach specialised cells in KS3 Biology with guided reading, diagrams to label and sentence frames for pupils who are new to English.

Help pupils explain how a cell’s structure helps it do its job. A short glossary and a worked example introduce the link between structure and function. Pupils then explore four examples: sperm cells, nerve cells, root hair cells and red blood cells.

What’s included

  • Five pupil pages with short reading passages and quick comprehension checks
  • Nerve cell and root hair cell diagrams to label using a word bank
  • A matching task that links cell features to their effects
  • Sentence frames, useful phrases and a short exit question
  • One teacher page with a suggested teaching sequence, an answer key and model responses
Suitable for KS3 pupils aged 11–14 who are new to English. Use it for a guided introduction, with time for pupils to rehearse an answer with a partner before writing.

Suggested teaching time 25–35 minutes, depending on the level of support.

Format One six-page A4 PDF in British English, with colour diagrams. Print pages 1–5 for pupils and keep page 6 for the teacher.
