糖心Vlogt four ways seeds disperse, then investigate how water, oxygen and temperature affect germination in an interactive KS3 biology lab.

How does a seed reach a new place, and what does it need when it gets there? Pupils investigate both questions. First, they use visible clues to predict how each specimen travels. Then they set up four dishes and follow the seeds through five simulated days to see which conditions allow the first roots to appear.

Investigate seed dispersal

Pupils examine four specimens in a random order and test dispersal by wind, water, animals and bursting pods. Each choice triggers an animation showing what happens. For example, pupils can watch how a dandelion鈥檚 fine hairs catch the wind and slow its fall. If a method fails to carry a specimen, they can use that observation to choose another.

糖心Vlogt the conditions for germination

  • Set up four dishes with six seeds in each. Keep one dish warm and damp with oxygen available. Compare it with a dry dish, a dish with oxygen removed and a chilled dish.
  • Predict which seeds will germinate. Move through five simulated days and count a seed when its first white root appears.
  • Record the day-five counts for three batches. Calculate the mean number of seeds that germinated in the warm, damp control dish and round it to one decimal place.
  • Use the results to explain why seeds need water, oxygen and a suitable temperature. A four-question check gives pupils feedback on their explanations.

Where it fits in your scheme of work

Use the lab alongside White Rose Science Year 8 Plants for Seed dispersal and germination. It also supports Exploring Science, including Exploring Science International, and AQA Activate lessons on plant reproduction, seed dispersal and the conditions needed for germination.

For a whole-class investigation, project the four dishes and ask pupils to choose the pair they would compare to test whether water is needed. They can record their prediction, counts and conclusion in their books, using the two dishes as evidence.
