A fully resourced KS3 RE lesson exploring the life and work of Rigoberta Menchú Tum, focusing on why she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and how her actions were influenced by religious beliefs.

Students learn about the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in Guatemala, before evaluating Rigoberta’s decision to pursue non-violent action and whether her beliefs influenced her work for justice and equality.

This lesson includes a comprehension reading, scaffolded gap-fill task and structured reflection questions, making it accessible and adaptable for a range of learners.

This resource is based on the PeaceJam scheme of work, which explores the lives of Nobel Peace Prize winners and encourages young people to think about how they can create positive change in the world. The original PeaceJam materials and readings are available via their website, and schools can contact PeaceJam directly to access further resources and opportunities for student involvement.

This lesson is a teacher-friendly adaptation of the PeaceJam materials, designed to be fully deliverable in a classroom setting and refined through use with KS3 pupils. PeaceJam have kindly given permission for their materials to be referenced and adapted within this resource and for my adaptations to be on TES.
