A complete KS3 History lesson on the Industrial Revolution, focused on the enquiry: Why did manners matter more during the Industrial Revolution?

This lesson explores how the rise of the middle class, urbanisation, and cultural change made manners central to Victorian society. Using examples such as railways, telegraphs, public parks, and the Great Exhibition of 1851, students investigate how new technologies shaped behaviour and identity. They also examine whether manners were the result of human agency (choices) or conditions (circumstances), developing their skills in causation and extended writing.

Use this lesson to help KS3 students understand the social and cultural changes of the Industrial Revolution. It works well as part of a scheme on industrial society and builds strong foundations for GCSE skills in causation, analysis, and evaluation.
