Support beginner EAL learners with three KS3 reading packs on animal, plant and specialised cells, with visual activities and answers.

Help pupils develop their understanding of cells while building confidence in reading and using scientific English. This bundle brings together three complementary resources for KS3 Biology, particularly suited to learners who are new to English and benefit from guided support.

What is included?

  1. Animal Cells — Reading Comprehension
Introduce five cell structures through visual vocabulary, guided reading, a labelled diagram and scaffolded activities. Pupils identify structures, match them to their functions and practise writing short explanations.

  2. Plant Cells — Reading Comprehension
Explore six plant-cell structures using a glossary, a short reading text, a colour diagram and labelling tasks. Comprehension questions and sentence starters help pupils explain what the structures do.

  3. Specialised Cells — Reading & Visual Activities
Explore how features help cells perform their jobs. Pupils read about sperm, nerve, root hair and red blood cells, label diagrams and explain links between structure and function.

Learning activities include:

  • Scientific vocabulary and short definitions
  • Guided reading and comprehension questions
  • Labelled diagrams and labelling tasks
  • Matching structures or features to their functions
  • Oral practice and sentence starters
  • Teacher notes and answers
    Who is it for?
KS3 pupils aged 11–14, particularly beginner EAL learners. The activities can be used in science lessons, supported small-group work, vocabulary practice or revision. Learners with limited English may benefit from teacher or peer support.

Format and suggested use
Three printable A4 PDF packs in British English. Use the resources across several lessons, in the suggested order: animal cells, plant cells, then specialised cells. Print pupil and teacher pages separately to keep the answers out of pupil copies. The animal and plant packs include colour illustrations; the specialised cells pack uses simplified diagrams.
