The aim of this lesson is to introduce students to Kaiser Wilhelm II and the political, social and personal background of Germany under his rule.

Students begin by exploring Wilhelm II’s family background, personality, relationships and position as Kaiser, before examining the challenges he faced as leader of a rapidly developing German Empire.

Particular attention is given to his character, including his ambition, paranoia and physical disability, while placing these personal characteristics within the wider political context of Imperial Germany.

Students develop an understanding of the key problems facing Wilhelm II and consider how far the Kaiser himself contributed to the difficulties experienced by Germany before the First World War.

The lesson includes a range of engaging activities, including a Thinking Quilt, a map activity exploring the German Empire, informative video links and a Summarising Pyramid to consolidate students’ understanding.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and develop a clear understanding of the significance of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The resource is specifically designed for AQA GCSE Germany 1890–1945: Democracy and Dictatorship, with exam skills clearly identified to help students understand how the knowledge they are learning links to GCSE assessment.

AQA GCSE Germany 1890 -1945: Democracy and Dictatorship - Kaiser to Weimar Golden Age Lessons & Resources Bundle

This 10-lesson bundle is the first part of a complete series of resources I have created for AQA GCSE Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship. Designed specifically for the AQA GCSE History specification, this bundle provides a structured teaching sequence covering Kaiser Wilhelm II, the impact of the First World War, the Weimar Constitution, the Treaty of Versailles, political uprisings, the Ruhr Crisis, hyperinflation, the Munich Beer Hall Putsch, Stresemann and the so-called Golden Age. The lessons combine detailed contextual knowledge with regular GCSE examination practice, helping students develop the skills required to achieve the highest grades. Rather than simply learning the content, students are repeatedly challenged to explain, analyse, evaluate and reach substantiated judgements. The lessons will allow students to demonstrate (AO1) knowledge and understanding of the key features and characteristics of the period studied from the Kaiser and the problems he faced as well as the implementation of the Treaty of Versailles and the challenges faced by the Weimar Government. They will study (AO2) second-order concepts such as change and continuity in the new Weimar Constitution and the causes and consequences of Stresemann’s policies. The analysis and evaluation of sources (AO3) are used in for example the Treaty of Versailles and the Munich Beer Hall Putsch lessons whilst substantiated judgements are made (AO4) on political and economic problems of the Weimar Republic as well as questioning whether the later 1920’s really were a Golden Age. The lessons are designed to be engaging, challenging and ready to teach, while also being fully editable so that you can adapt them to suit your own students and teaching style. The lessons are as follows: L1 Kaiser Wilhelm II (Free resource) L2 The Kaiser’s Government and Weltpolitik L3 The impact of World War 1 on Germany (free resource) L4 The Weimar Constitution and Political Parties L5 The Treaty of Versailles L6 Political Uprisings - the Spartacists and the Kapp Putsch (Free resource) L7 The Ruhr Crisis and Hyperinflation L8 The Munich Beer Hall Putsch# L9 Gustav Stresemann L10 The Golden Age of Stresemann Included within this Bundle: 10 fully editable PowerPoint lessons Complete teaching sequence for Weimar Germany AQA GCSE specification-focused content GCSE examination practice throughout, with Model answers to support students Retrieval practice activities Differentiated tasks and questioning Source analysis and evaluation activities Higher-order thinking tasks Suggested teaching strategies Enquiry-based learning activities Supported judgement and evaluation tasks Differentiated materials Resources suitable for mixed-ability GCSE classes The lessons are designed to build students' knowledge and examination skills progressively, making this bundle particularly useful for teachers looking for ready to use AQA Germany resources that combine content coverage with serious GCSE exam preparation. After completing this unit, I strongly recommend setting a full GCSE mock examination to assess students' knowledge and identify areas for further revision.
