What is ionic product of water? How is the pH of strong bases calculated? What is a neutral solution? What is a diprotic or dibasic base? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 4 – WCH14, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slides 3 – 4: use this section to introduce students to the equilibrium expression for the ionic product of water
Slides 5 – 6: use these slides to explain how the ionic product of water can be used to calculate the pH of a strong base
Slides 7 – 9: this is a worked example to show students how to calculate the pH of a strong base. The working out animates on the screen in sequence as you click. There are also hidden slides of the worked examples, so that you can print the questions for your students
Slides 10 – 14: use this section to teach students exactly what a neutral solution is. There is a talking heads slide where three characters present their ideas on what neutral solutions are. Use this to encourage class discussion and debate.
Slide 15 – another worked example, this time working out the pH of a diprotic base. The working out animates on the screen in sequence as you click
Slides 16 – 18: learning pit stop to help students embed their learning regarding Kw so far. Answers appears on the screen as you click. Slides 17 and 18 are hidden so that you can print the questions for the students
Slide 19 – this slide covers pKw, and what a low pKw indicates
Slides 20 – 25: Exam questions with mark scheme answers (included with the resource)

The PowerPoints are as follows: 1. Bronsted-Lowry Theory 2. pH of strong and weak acids | Ka 3. Ionic product of water 4. pH of acids, bases and salts | Effect of dilution on pH of acids 5. Buffer solutions 6. pH Titration curves Each lesson is exactly that . . . a lesson. There is a starter slide, lesson objectives slide, introduction of new knowledge slides, worked examples and then opportunities for students to try independent practice through mini plenary tasks comprised of several questions of graded difficulties. Questions are interspersed through the lessons at regular intervals and always have answers that animate on to the screen when you click.
