Final writing outcome

A suspenseful narrative retelling of ‘Into the Forest’ that weaves in references to other fairy tales the boy passes on his journey. Pupils use ‘that’ to link ideas (e.g. the path that was dark) and apostrophes for contraction (didn’t, wouldn’t, I’m) to build atmosphere and voice.

Grammar features (Year 2 NC-aligned)
  • Using subordination with ‘that’ to link ideas and add information (e.g. the path that was dark, the coat that was red).
  • Apostrophes for contraction (didn’t, wouldn’t, I’m, can’t, won’t).
Themes explored

Fear and bravery, family and belonging, intertextuality with fairy tales.

Key vocabulary

Forest, shortcut, shiver, echo, lonely, whisper, tangled, warmth.
