Explore International Week of Deaf People from 22–28 September with this engaging, inclusive whole-school assembly for primary schools.

This assembly introduces pupils to deaf people, deaf culture and the different ways people communicate. Children learn that people do not all experience sound in the same way and may communicate using British Sign Language (BSL), speech, lipreading, hearing support, written notes, captions or a combination of these.

The presentation explores three key ideas: deaf people are part of a rich and diverse community, BSL is a real and important language, and accessible communication helps everyone take part. Pupils consider simple ways to make communication more inclusive, such as facing someone when speaking, using captions and written instructions, taking turns and checking that everyone has understood.

Through the story of Maya and Lewis, pupils see how small changes to communication can help a deaf child feel included. The story also introduces pupils to simple BSL signs and highlights how inclusive environments can remove barriers to participation.

The presentation includes an interactive “How can we include everyone?” activity, a short whole-school BSL activity, audience questions and a practical reflection encouraging pupils to make their school kinder, clearer and more welcoming for everyone.
