Show Year 8 how pictures and music become 1s and 0s with this visual, colourful and ready-to-teach Computing PowerPoint. Pupils read a 1-bit bitmap, learn resolution and colour depth, and calculate image file sizes using bits and bytes. Sound is taught through sampling, sample rate and bit depth, with a worked file-size example for mono and stereo. Lossy and lossless compression are compared, and run-length encoding is shown step by step. A misconceptions slide targets common errors, such as forgetting to divide by 8. Two interactive, hands-on activities, decoding a pixel picture and a file-size challenge, give practice. Non-specialist friendly and ideal as a cover lesson, with a closing slide showing how it builds towards GCSE Computer Science. Every slide is written directly to the pupil, uses correct computing vocabulary and includes stretch tasks, so confident programmers are challenged while others are supported. Speech-bubble prompts from Laura point out where marks are won and lost, and all activities work with pen, paper and a calculator, so no computers are needed.
