Make ice cream in a bag while building recipe sequencing, life skills, and communication through clear photo-based activities for special education.

I created this resource to give teachers a structured and visually supported way to introduce a supervised cooking activity while practising functional learning skills. Students can follow the visual recipe, sequence the steps, identify ingredients and tools, communicate during the activity, and complete differentiated follow-up tasks.

What Is Included
  • 80 US Letter pages in one editable PowerPoint file
  • 20-page adapted book after assembly
  • 12-step visual recipe
  • 58 cut-apart visual pieces and cards
  • Ingredient and tool checklists
  • 18 differentiated worksheets
  • Three sequencing levels using 4, 8, and 12 steps
  • Communication board
  • Math and science extension activities
  • Progress checks
  • Answer keys
  • Picture-based alternative for students who cannot complete the food preparation activity
Skills Practised

Students can work on:

  • Sequencing
  • Following directions
  • Identifying ingredients and kitchen tools
  • Measuring
  • Retelling a process
  • Requesting help or a turn
  • Functional communication
  • Independent living skills
  • Making safer choices during food preparation
Classroom Use

Teachers can begin by reading the adapted book and introducing the ingredients, tools, and sequence of the activity. The photo-based steps can then be used as visual prompts during a supervised ice cream in a bag activity.

After the practical activity, students can complete the sequencing level that best matches their needs. The cards can also be used for matching, ordering steps, retelling the process, small-group instruction, or one-to-one work.

A picture-based simulation is included for situations where actual food preparation is not appropriate.

Who Is This Resource For?

This resource is suitable for students who benefit from structured visual support, including learners in:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders ASD provision
  • Special education
  • Independent living and life skills programmes
  • Speech and language sessions
  • Small-group or one-to-one instruction
  • Supported home learning

The three differentiated levels allow teachers to adjust the amount of visual support and sequencing complexity for individual learners.

File Information

You will receive one editable PPTX file containing 80 US Letter pages.

Selected pages can be printed at actual size. Reusable cards may be laminated, cut on the marked lines, and stored in labelled pouches.

The photo-style visuals are AI-generated.

Food preparation must always be completed with adult supervision and appropriate individual allergy checks. Ingredients and physical cooking supplies are not included.
