This IB Maths AA SL Topic 3.3 – Applications of Right and Non-Right-Angled Trigonometry resource develops students’ confidence in applying trigonometry to real-world geometric situations. It begins by introducing bearings and the conventions used to describe them, including measuring clockwise from north and expressing bearings as three-figure angles. Students then practise constructing accurate labelled diagrams from written information and using triangle rules to calculate unknown distances.

The lesson also explores angles of elevation and depression, helping students recognise the relationship between horizontal lines, lines of sight, and corresponding alternate angles. Students apply right-angled trigonometry to multi-step contextual problems involving height, horizontal distance, elapsed time, and speed.
