Engaging, student-centred IB Geography lesson exploring global population distribution, population density and the physical and human factors that explain why people live where they do. Designed for IB Geography Core 1.0, this fully resourced lesson combines geographical knowledge with map interpretation, data analysis, inquiry, debate and evaluation.

Students move beyond simply identifying densely and sparsely populated areas to investigate how climate, water, relief, soils, natural resources, technology, industrialisation, urbanisation, transport and economic development interact to shape population patterns at different scales.

The lesson develops essential IB Geography skills including:
Describing global population patterns accurately
Distinguishing population distribution, density and population size
Interpreting density maps, dot maps and cartograms
Comparing different forms of geographical representation
Explaining physical and human influences on population distribution
Using data and named examples as evidence
Building geographical causal chains
Evaluating the relative importance of different factors
Recognising how explanations change according to scale and time

Students investigate key geographical ideas including:
Global population distribution
Physical and human factors
Freshwater and river floodplains
Coastal population concentration
Agricultural innovation
Industrialisation and urbanisation
China鈥檚 urban transition
Core-periphery patterns
Technology and carrying capacity
Economic development and fertility
Changing importance of factors over time

The lesson includes a wide variety of active and inquiry-based learning opportunities, including map comparison, diamond ranking, data interpretation, decision-making, structured debate, evaluation tasks and IB-style exam practice.

Students are repeatedly challenged to move from DESCRIPTION - EXPLANATION - EVALUATION, making this an excellent resource for developing AO1, AO2 and AO3 skills.

IB exam-style questions include 4-mark describe, 6-mark explain and 10-mark evaluate tasks, with a clear paragraph structure to support stronger written responses.
