This fully resourced lesson explores the contribution of the Islamic world to the development of the Renaissance. Students investigate how centres of learning such as Córdoba preserved, developed and transmitted knowledge that later influenced Renaissance Europe.

The lesson begins by revisiting prior learning before introducing students to the city of Córdoba, one of the most advanced centres of learning in medieval Europe. Through guided reading, source analysis and discussion activities, students examine how Islamic scholars preserved classical knowledge, developed new ideas and promoted observation, investigation and scientific thinking.

Students investigate the work of influential scholars including Ibn Sina, Ibn al-Haytham, Al-Khwarizmi and Al-Idrisi, exploring their contributions to medicine, mathematics, geography and scientific enquiry. A collaborative research and teaching activity encourages students to become experts on individual scholars before sharing their knowledge with others.

The lesson also examines how knowledge moved between cultures through translation and scholarship, helping students understand the connections between the Islamic Golden Age and the European Renaissance. Students apply their understanding through structured PEE and PEEKA writing activities, supported by assessment materials and model responses.

Throughout the lesson, students develop historical knowledge, source analysis, explanation and evaluation skills while exploring the global origins of Renaissance learning.

A complete lesson requiring minimal preparation.
