The History of Sugar – Year 7 Historical Enquiry

Enquiry question: What impact has the sugar trade had on people’s lives, AD350 to the present?

This enquiry uses the history of sugar as an engaging way to introduce Year 7 students to historical periods and chronology.

Rather than teaching historical periods in isolation, students follow one familiar product – sugar – across time and investigate how its production, trade, availability and impact on people’s lives changed from AD350 to the present day.

This enquiry provides a clear example of how to teach periodisation and progression through time without periods becoming disconnected blocks of knowledge.

Students repeatedly return to the same central questions:

What changed? What caused the change? What impact did it have on people’s lives?

As the enquiry progresses, students can see the transformation of sugar from a rare luxury, to a plantation commodity connected with enslavement and empire, to a mass-produced everyday product, and finally to a modern commodity associated with global consumption and health concerns.

The sequence also deliberately develops students’ historical writing. Early lessons use structured change → event → impact tables, before students gradually move towards complete explanatory sentences and paragraphs.
The enquiry culminates in an extended historical assessment:

“What impact has the sugar trade had on people’s lives, AD350 to the present?

Students are expected to organise their knowledge chronologically, use evidence from different periods, explain cause and effect, and make links across time.

The resource includes scaffolded writing support and allowing students to demonstrate progression from simple description towards a structured explanation of change and impact across time.
