AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to assess and judge the strength of the Tudor economy under Henry VIII.

Students begin by recapping the economic policies of Henry VII and the measures he introduced to manage a changing economy.

They then compare these developments with the reign of Henry VIII by evaluating the judgement of historian John Guy, who argued that England was “economically healthier, more expansive and more optimistic at any time since the Roman occupation.”

Students analyse and rate the effectiveness of Henry VIII’s economic policies using a creative “household energy rating” style activity, encouraging them to assess how efficient Tudor economic management really was and consider how improvements could have been made.

The plenary challenges students to deepen and expand their explanations of Tudor economic policy, using an excellent strategy inspired by @MrFitzHistory.

The lesson also includes exam extract question practice with a structured writing frame and mark scheme to support student progress and confidence.

An enquiry question is introduced at the beginning of the lesson and revisited throughout, helping students track their learning and make links across the wider unit of work.
