A complete KS3 Halloween Music composition lesson in which students explore how composers create tension and suspense before composing their own spooky soundtrack.

Designed as a highly practical 50–60 minute Music lesson, students investigate how musical elements such as dynamics, tempo, pitch, timbre, texture, harmony, dissonance, rhythm and silence can be manipulated to create a frightening atmosphere.

The lesson moves from listening and retrieval into modelling, practical experimentation and an extended composition challenge, with clear support and stretch built throughout.

Included in the resource:

Fully editable PowerPoint lesson
Engaging Halloween-themed listening starter
Musical-elements retrieval activity
Dual-coded key vocabulary
Sentence starters for musical analysis
Spooky motif and ostinato activities
Practical keyboard/composition guidance
Structured haunted-house soundtrack composition brief
Support, Core and Stretch pathways
Clear success criteria
Performance and peer-feedback opportunities
Reflection and exit-ticket activities
Printable supporting materials
Teacher guidance and suggested listening
Optional extension opportunities

Students are encouraged to make deliberate musical choices rather than simply creating random “scary sounds, helping develop their understanding of how composers use the elements of music to communicate mood and atmosphere.

The resource works particularly well with Years 7–9 and can be delivered using keyboards, classroom instruments, music technology or a combination of these.

Suggested listening is not embedded. A link/suggestion is provided so teachers can use an appropriately licensed suspense track or their own school-approved audio source.

Includes differentiated composition pathways, listening activities, vocabulary support, practical tasks, success criteria and reflection. All three resources are fully editable, allowing teachers to adapt questions, timings and activities for their own classes. The whole-school resources require no specialist subject knowledge and are designed to work with mixed KS3/KS4 groups. The Music lesson provides an additional subject-specific activity for schools wanting something more curriculum-focused alongside the seasonal activities. The Halloween theme is deliberately secondary-school appropriate, using mystery, autumn imagery, pumpkins, puzzles and atmospheric visuals rather than gore, jump scares or disturbing content. Ideal for KS3 and KS4, tutor time, form time, enrichment, cover lessons, Halloween events, end-of-half-term activities, team building and KS3 Music. Editable PowerPoints | Printable materials | Teacher guidance | Answers included © SharpeEducation 2026. Licensed for use under the applicable TES Resource Licence.
