The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Gustav Stresemann’s policies and decide whether he really was the “saviour of Germany”.

Students begin with an engaging character-card activity, taking on the roles of different people living in Germany between 1918 and 1923. They introduce themselves to other students and discover the different problems, worries and concerns facing German society during the early years of the Weimar Republic.

The lesson then analyses Stresemann’s economic and political policies and their impact on different groups within German society. Students analyse evidence and consider whether Stresemann genuinely solved Germany’s problems or simply “papered over the cracks”.

A range of engaging activities helps students develop and test their knowledge, including a points-based quiz, source analysis and colour-coding activities focusing on Stresemann’s economic and political achievements.

Students return to their character roles at the end of the lesson and judge whether Stresemann had actually made their lives better, supporting their opinions with historical evidence.

The lesson encourages students to consider both sides of the argument: Was Stresemann a brilliant statesman who rescued Germany, or were the improvements of the Stresemann era only temporary?

A GCSE exam practice question is included, with structured support available for students who need it, alongside a model answer to help students understand what a successful response looks like.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and develop a balanced historical judgement.

Included in this lesson:
Fully editable PowerPoint
Stresemann’s economic and political policies
Strengths and weaknesses of Stresemann
Character-card starter activity
Colour-coding activities
Points-based knowledge quiz
GCSE exam practice question with tips and model answer included
