Explore one of the world鈥檚 most extraordinary underwater landforms with this engaging Great Blue Hole reading comprehension resource.

Students will learn where the Great Blue Hole is located and discover how this giant marine sinkhole measures about 300 metres across and more than 120 metres deep. The passages explain how it began as a limestone cave when sea levels were much lower during past Ice Age periods.

Students will explore how rising sea levels flooded the cave and created the deep blue sinkhole seen today. The resource also introduces the enormous stalactites found underwater, the surrounding coral reef and marine life such as sharks and tropical fish.

The passages also explain how the Great Blue Hole is protected within the Blue Hole Natural Monument and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.
