Grace Hopper Pioneer of Computer Programming
About:
Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral who helped shape the
early world of computer programming. She created one of the first compilers, a tool that translates human
readable code into instructions a computer can run. Her work made programming languages easier to use and
helped lead to the creation of COBOL, a language still used in business computing today. This worksheet explores
her life, discoveries, and lasting influence on computer science.
What鈥檚 Included:
This worksheet features Article (5 paragraphs), True/False (16 statements), Comprehension Questions (6),
Multiple Choice (15), Word Search (15 words), Crossword (10 clues), and Odd One Out (30 words).
Target Grades:
Grades 5-8
Teacher Note:
This worksheet works well alongside lessons on the history of computing or women in science and the military.
Encourage students to discuss how making programming languages easier to use helped more people learn to
work with computers.
