A complete, ready-to-teach lesson for the new IB Global Politics syllabus, introducing the differences between Human, Civil and Political Rights while also developing the analytical skills students need for Paper 2.

This is designed to be ready to go as soon as you download it. The PowerPoint and student worksheet are fully matched, the tasks are already sequenced, examples are built in, and the lesson includes the scaffolding, extension questions and exam practice needed to teach it without having to create anything extra first.

The lesson moves well beyond definitions. Students work with current cases from Ukraine, El Salvador, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, looking at how rights can be protected, restricted and contested in practice. A particular focus is placed on political mechanisms – helping students explain how political actions actually produce political consequences rather than simply describing what happened.

Students gradually move from identifying different types of rights to developing precise evidence, explaining political mechanisms, linking cases to power, sovereignty and legitimacy, evaluating different perspectives and choosing the most appropriate case for an argument.

The lesson also includes a current case study on the UK proscription of Palestine Action, allowing students to compare competing perspectives on state power, civil rights and proportionality.

The final tasks bring the cases back together before students plan a Paper 2 Section B response on whether state power represents the greatest threat to the effective protection of human rights.

Included in the download: PowerPoint presentation, student worksheet, scaffolded activities, extension questions, current real-world examples, Paper 2 analytical practice and a full Section B planning task.
