GCSE Macbeth – Witches, Fate & Free Will

A complete enquiry-led GCSE English Literature lesson exploring the witches’ influence over Macbeth and whether they control his fate or Macbeth remains responsible for his own choices.

Students investigate Shakespeare’s presentation of the supernatural, fate, free will, responsibility and equivocation, using evidence from across the play to develop and defend their own interpretations.

The lesson includes:

  • Retrieval-based Register Task
  • Enquiry question exploring fate and free will
  • What Would You Do? decision-making activity
  • Follow-up exploring Macbeth’s initial response to the prophecy
  • 10 quotation evidence cards for a control and influence sorting activity
  • Teacher evidence sheet with suggested interpretations
  • Investigation of Macbeth’s changing relationship with the witches
  • Equivocation activity exploring the Act 4 prophecies
  • Macbeth and the Witches on Trial argument-building task
  • GCSE-style analytical writing activity
  • Final Verdict plenary
  • Full teacher notes with guidance, insight, differentiation and timings

The lesson encourages students to move beyond a simple interpretation of the witches as controlling Macbeth, considering the more complex relationship between supernatural manipulation and individual responsibility.

Suitable for GCSE English Literature study of Macbeth and compatible with major UK exam boards.

The lesson develops quotation analysis, interpretation, evaluation, argument and supported judgement.
