Five structured lessons, annotated models, writing techniques and assessment support for AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 5.

Most students know the phrase ‘show, don’t tell’. Putting it into practice - while choosing details, controlling sentences and keeping a description coherent - is more difficult.

This independent teaching package breaks descriptive writing into decisions that students can practise and improve. Across five substantial lessons, students learn to establish a clear setting, choose sensory details for a purpose, sharpen sentence control, organise a scene and write independently in timed conditions.

What’s inside

  • 22-page Student Practice Booklet in printable PDF and editable Word formats: structured explanations, close-reading tasks, vocabulary and sentence workshops, planning frames, original prompts and generous ruled writing space.
  • 12-page Teacher Guide in printable PDF and editable Word formats: five 55-minute lesson plans, teaching suggestions, worked answers, differentiation guidance, AO5/AO6 reference, feedback and moderation notes.
  • 5-page Annotated Writing Models in printable PDF and editable Word formats: contrasting developing and controlled responses, a complete original model and an explanation of the writer’s decisions.
  • 4 printable pages for assessment and feedback: AO5/AO6 overview, teacher feedback sheet, self-check and focused redrafting activity.
  • Original illustrated ferry-terminal stimulus, supplied as a PNG for classroom display.

Five-lesson sequence

  1. Building a setting and atmosphere
  2. Sensory detail and precise vocabulary
  3. Sentence variety and technical control
  4. Organisation, focus and cohesion
  5. Timed descriptive-writing practice with self-check

Peer review and targeted redrafting are provided as a separate optional follow-up (later lesson or homework), not within the timed assessment.

Assessment alignment

Prepared with reference to the AQA 8700 requirements applicable from the 2026 examinations. Paper 1 Question 5 is worth 40 marks, comprising AO5 (24 marks) and AO6 (16 marks). The illustration is an optional source of ideas for descriptive writing. The timed task is an original description-only practice activity, not a complete past paper; the teacher guide links to the official AQA source documents.

Audience

AQA GCSE English Language teachers, Year 10/11 learners, small-group interventions, revision sessions and private tutors.
