This session explores how to manipulate sentence variety to transform flat prose into engaging storytelling. We examine the “heartbeat of a narrative by contrasting extended descriptive sentences with punchy micro-sentences to control pacing and create humor. Students will learn to break repetitive habits by focusing on subordinating conjunctions like “when and “although to vary sentence starters. By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to craft grade 5-9 responses that use deliberate structural choices to evoke character, atmosphere, tension and humour.
