Get a quick, useful picture of your new Year 5 class without starting the year with a lengthy assessment.

This FREE Year 5 English and Maths Mini Diagnostic Assessment provides a short beginning-of-year check of selected Year 4 prerequisite knowledge, helping teachers identify strengths, gaps and areas that may need further investigation as pupils enter Year 5.

The resource contains two 12-mark mini assessments, one for English and one for Maths, designed to take approximately 15 minutes per subject.

What is included?

  • Year 5 English Mini Diagnostic – 12 marks
  • Year 5 Maths Mini Diagnostic – 12 marks
  • Teacher answers with a diagnostic focus for every question
  • Individual pupil gap analysis
  • Class gap analysis
  • Suggested next steps
  • Automatic Excel diagnostic tracker for entering pupil results and quickly identifying patterns across the class

Rather than giving you only a total score, the resource is designed to help you see what pupils can do and where the gaps are. The English assessment samples areas including apostrophes, present perfect, Standard English, direct speech, expanded noun phrases, subordinate clauses and spelling, while Maths includes place value, calculation, fractions and decimals, measures, area and money.

Why is this version free?

This is deliberately a mini diagnostic, not a complete Year 5 baseline assessment.

With only 12 questions per subject, it is intended to provide an initial snapshot and help you identify pupils or curriculum areas that may need further checking. It should not be used by itself to make secure attainment judgements.

It also gives you an opportunity to try the **KJ_EduInsights Assess → Diagnose → Act approach **before purchasing one of the complete baseline toolkits.

Need the full Year 5 diagnostic assessment?

The complete KJ_EduInsights Year 5 English and Maths Baseline Toolkits provide a much more detailed beginning-of-year picture, including:

Full assessments | Detailed marking guidance | Diagnostic analysis | SEND-accessible versions | Curriculum mapping | Automated tracking | Intervention support

Use the free mini version for a quick first check, then move to the complete baseline if you need the depth of evidence required to identify gaps, group pupils, plan intervention and establish meaningful starting points for Year 5.
