This self-led university engagement lesson introduces students to essential academic research skills, helping them prepare for further and higher education. Students explore how to use Google Scholar to find reliable academic sources, understand the importance of evaluating information, and develop confidence in referencing sources correctly.

Through a series of guided activities, learners will discover how academic research differs from a standard internet search, identify credible sources, and practise creating accurate references using a recognised referencing style. The lesson encourages independent learning while developing valuable study skills that can be applied across a range of subjects.

Designed to be completed independently, this resource is ideal for university outreach programmes, study skills sessions, transition activities or enrichment lessons. No prior knowledge is required, making it suitable for students considering higher education or looking to strengthen their research skills.
