AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the extent to which Elizabeth I presided over a true Golden Age.

Students are introduced to the idea of the Elizabethan “Golden Age” before exploring whether this reputation was fully deserved or carefully created through royal propaganda and the powerful image of Gloriana.
The lesson examines key features of Elizabethan society, including achievements in the arts and theatre, popular entertainment, education, communication, patronage and growing wealth. Students are encouraged to think critically about who actually benefited from Elizabeth’s reign and whether the idea of a Golden Age was reality or myth.
A variety of engaging tasks, discussion activities and source-based exercises help students build up evidence before reaching a supported judgement. Students also explore how Elizabeth used portraiture, symbolism and propaganda to strengthen her image and authority.
The lesson includes video links, images and structured activities throughout to maintain engagement and deepen understanding. It finishes with GCSE-style exam question practice supported by a detailed mark scheme to help students develop analytical and evaluative skills.
An enquiry question is introduced at the beginning of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to demonstrate clear progress in their learning across the lesson and wider unit of work.
