This lesson explores diversity in sex development (DSD) and introduces students to conditions where chromosomal and hormonal development differs from typical male and female patterns. The lesson begins with a thought-provoking starter questioning why biological development does not always follow typical patterns, encouraging students to reflect on how chromosomes and hormones influence sex development.

Core AO1 knowledge is delivered through clear explanations of androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), Klinefelter’s syndrome (XXY), and Turner syndrome (XO), supported by concise explanations and relatable examples. Students reinforce understanding through fast-paced mini whiteboard hinge questions designed to address common misconceptions about chromosomes, hormones and biological sex.

Students then develop AO2 application skills through exam-style scenarios involving real-life contexts such as AIS and Turner syndrome, supported by structured questions and a 4-mark exam-style application task with mark scheme. Reflection questions encourage students to consider how learning about DSD may challenge traditional views of biological sex.

AO3 evaluation is developed using structured PEEL paragraphs, examining strengths and limitations of DSD research. Key points include contributions to the nature–nurture debate, real-world medical applications, environmental influences, and methodological issues such as sampling bias. Understanding is checked through true/false hinge questions and guided paragraph-writing practice.

The lesson concludes with essay-writing skill development, where students complete and structure a PEEL paragraph before engaging in a dilemma-style debate on whether gender should be considered biologically fixed or flexible.
