Before a learner starts a work placement on a cleaning crew, they need two things: the words people will use, and the steps for the jobs they will actually be given. This set gives them both, in plain language, with no worksheets that look like they were made for a much younger child.

This set covers school and office cleaning work: toilets, chemical safety, mopping, and restocking. Emptying rubbish, sweeping, and vacuuming are already routines in my Task Analysis Data Sheets, and hotel guest rooms are in the Hotel Housekeeping set. General soft skills are in my Soft Skills Scenario Cards.

What is in it (cleaning and caretaking)

  • A job snapshot: 4 common roles (caretaker, day porter, floor technician, cleaning and caretaking helper), what a shift looks like, and what supervisors look for
    • 16 vocabulary cards and a matching worksheet
    • 5 task sequence cards (clean a toilet; disinfect high-touch surfaces; fill a spray bottle at the dilution station; wet mop a floor; restock a toilet) with put-it-in-order worksheets
    • 8 safety rules and a safe-or-unsafe sort
    • 12 “what is the rule here?â€ procedure cards and a planner for writing answers
    • An on-the-job checklist the learner and the supervisor or job coach both rate
    • An answer key and blank cards so you can add your own placement’s routines

How I use it: snapshot and vocabulary first, then I model one task card at a time and the learner practises while a partner reads the steps. Procedure cards work best three or four at a time as a starter or with role-play. The checklist goes out before a placement visit and comes back after, so you have simple ratings to bring to an EHCP annual review or SEN Support review and to the Preparing for Adulthood employment outcomes.

Every placement is different, so the answer key says so: if a learner’s answer matches the rule at their real placement, count it.

UK edition: A4, UK spelling and UK workplace words throughout. 13 pages (PDF) plus an editable Word file.
