This pack covers Edexcel specification points 4.6, 4.7 and 4.17: recalling and using v = f × λ and v = x ÷ t, how to measure the speed of sound in air and of ripples on water, and the Core Practical investigating waves in a solid and a fluid.

The Topic Mastery Sheet explains both wave speed equations with a worked example, describes how to measure the speed of sound in air and the speed of ripples with an original ripple tank diagram, and sets out the Core Practical on waves in a solid using a tapped metal rod. An exam tip comes from the June 2025 Edexcel examiners’ report. A key vocabulary table gives the exact Edexcel terms, and six common errors are corrected. The Grade 8-9 stretch section explains why the frequency of a wave does not change when its speed changes.

The Student Exam Practice Sheet (21 marks) has six questions. They progress from a multiple choice item through wave speed calculations (including finding the wavelength of sound in sea water), a speed of sound experiment and a wave in a metal rod, to a 6-mark ripple tank method question, marked by levels. Answers are checked against the Pearson CP4-5 assessment wherever an equivalent item exists.

Project the mastery sheet for a ready-made revision lesson, set the practice sheet as homework or a timed check, or use the pack for intervention and independent study. PDF and editable Word versions are both included. Written for Edexcel GCSE Combined Science (1SC0); points that appear only in the separate GCSE Physics specification are not included.
