Are courage and bravery really the same thing?
This high school pre-reading activity encourages students to think critically about the similarities and differences between courage and bravery before beginning To Kill a Mockingbird.

Students choose between a concept web or Venn diagram to organize their thinking, then respond to five open-ended questions that explore whether bravery can be immediate or instinctive while courage may involve conscious choice, responsibility, consequence, or burden.

The activity concludes with a short 2–3 paragraph essay:
Can a person be brave but not courageous?
Students are asked to clearly state their position, explain the distinction they see between courage and bravery, and support their reasoning with an example.

Includes:

  • Courage & Bravery concept web
  • Courage vs. Bravery Venn diagram
  • Five critical-thinking questions
  • Short essay prompt
  • Pre-reading connection to To Kill a Mockingbird
