Change and Loss – Primary PSHE Lesson on Life Transitions, Resilience, and Emotional Awareness

Description:
Support Primary pupils in understanding the concept of change in a gentle, age-appropriate way with this thoughtful PSHE lesson. Using nature, storytelling, and creative reflection, children learn that change is a natural part of life and begin to build empathy, resilience, and coping skills.

Lesson Overview:
Starter Activity: Explore natural items that show change, such as leaves turning colour, seeds, or photos showing the four seasons.
Main Activities:
Gentle class discussion about change in nature and everyday life
Read a comforting story about change or loss (e.g., Badger’s Parting Gifts or The Tiny Seed)
Create a “Changes in My Life” Timeline to reflect on growth and learning new skills
Make a Seasons Wheel to show how nature changes throughout the year
Plant seeds and observe how they grow and change over time
Classroom Culture: Handle the topic with sensitivity and care. Alert pastoral or wellbeing staff before teaching. Encourage discussion around natural and positive examples of change, and never pressure pupils to share personal experiences.

Assessment:
Teacher observation of engagement and understanding during discussion and activities
Optional reflection drawing: “Changes I Have Experienced”
Quiet follow-up with any child showing signs of emotional distress

Skills Developed:
Understanding that change is a normal part of life
Emotional awareness and empathy
Developing resilience and coping strategies
