The Common Nouns and Proper Nouns is a 6-page worksheet has been designed for EAL A2 and ESOL Skills for Life Entry 2 learners to develop confidence in recognising, using common and capitalising proper nouns in everyday English.

The worksheet begins by introducing the difference between common nouns and proper nouns, supported by simple definitions, examples, and capitalisation rules. Learners then complete vocabulary-building activities by matching nouns to pictures and sorting words into categories such as people, places, things, organisations, businesses, events, days, and months.

Learners reinforce their understanding through a variety of scaffolded activities engaging tasks:
• identifying common nouns in sentences
• classifying nouns into categories
• reading paragraphs to identify and capitalise proper nouns
• correcting punctuation and capital letters
• and sorting vocabulary into the correct groups.

These activities provide opportunities to practise grammar, spelling, punctuation, reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
The worksheet concludes with two independent writing tasks in which learners write their own sentences using common nouns and proper nouns.

The 29-slide teaching presentation has been designed to accompany the Common Nouns and Proper Nouns worksheet for EAL A2 and ESOL Skills for Life Entry 2 learners. It provides a structured, teacher-led lesson that introduces key grammar concepts before guiding learners through vocabulary development, reading, speaking and writing activities. The presentation also includes answers to controlled practice tasks, making whole-class feedback quick and effective while reducing teachers’ marking workload.

This resource is suitable for:
• introducing common and proper nouns;

• preparation for CEFR A2 and Trinity ESOL Skills for Life Entry 2 writing assessments;
