Unit 2.3: Ocio, espectáculos e invitaciones (Leisure, entertainments and invitations)
In this unit, students learn to talk and write in Spanish about their hobbies and free time, about entertainment events and celebrations, and about accepting and refusing invitations. The unit moves from describing what students do regularly in the present tense to talking about what they will do at parties and celebrations using the near future. Exam-style tasks are used throughout.

Topics covered
Free time and hobbies: sports, music, festivals and outdoor pursuits
Entertainment venues and events: cinemas, theatres, concerts, museums, sports facilities
Celebrations and parties: birthday parties, surprise parties and special occasions, planning and organisation
Accepting and refusing invitations: reasons for accepting or declining, keeping secrets

Grammar focus
Regular, irregular and stem-changing verbs in the present tense
The near future with ir a plus the infinitive
Infinitives after gustar, encantar and querer
Contractions: al and del
Adjective agreement
Question words beginning with a preposition

How the unit is taught
Reading: five texts about teenagers’ hobbies and a birthday celebration, with vocabulary matching, gap-filling and multiple-choice questions in exam style.
Listening: five audio extracts about sport, entertainment and a party invitation, with multiple-choice and gap-filling questions.
Grammar: a booklet with explanations, rule tables and example sentences from the unit’s own sentence builder, followed by five exercises for each of eight grammar sections, with answers provided.
Short story: a seven-chapter narrative about a surprise birthday party, with comprehension questions after each chapter.

By the end of the unit, students can: describe their hobbies and free time activities, talk about entertainment and celebrations, accept and refuse invitations with reasons, and answer exam-style reading, listening and writing questions on the topic.
