Brain Boss Lesson 10 – Be the Boss of Your Brain Executive Functioning

The final lesson in the Brain Boss Executive Functioning programme, bringing together the skills and strategies pupils have developed throughout the unit.

THIS LESSON DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT COMPLETING THE REST OF THE COURSE.

The focus shifts from learning individual executive-function skills to helping pupils answer three important questions:

What is actually going wrong?
What does my Brain Boss need?
Which strategy could help?

Pupils revisit eight key areas:

Task Initiation • Attention Control • Working Memory • Organisation • Planning & Prioritising • Flexible Thinking • Self-Monitoring • Emotional Control

They learn that real-life difficulties often involve several executive-function skills at the same time and that successful independent functioning means recognising the problem and selecting a strategy that actually matches it.

Activities include:
The Brain Boss Disaster
Which Brain Boss Skill Do I Need?
Brain Boss Diagnostic Centre
One Problem – More Than One Skill
The Wrong Tool strategy challenge
Brain Boss Tool Wall
The 60-Second Brain Boss Check
Brain Boss Control Centre
Quick-fire Choose Your Response scenarios
Know Your Brain Boss self-reflection
Build Your Brain Boss Toolbox
When Do I Need Help?
The Ultimate Brain Boss Challenge
Final reflection and exit ticket

The lesson introduces a simple process pupils can take beyond the programme:

STOP → NOTICE → IDENTIFY → CHOOSE → TRY → CHECK

Pupils finish by creating a personalised understanding of their own strengths, challenges, warning signs and most useful strategies, helping move executive-function learning from the classroom into everyday life.

The lesson also reinforces an important final message:

Being independent doesn’t mean doing everything alone. Asking for help can be a Brain Boss strategy.

Suitable for KS2, KS3, SEND/SEN, ADHD support, SEMH, pastoral intervention, PSHE, study skills, tutor time and executive-function interventions.

Core message:

NOTICE. CHOOSE. USE YOUR TOOLS.

BE THE BOSS OF YOUR BRAIN.
