The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the role and significance of Black Tudors and explore how they contributed to life in Tudor England.

Inspired by the pioneering research of Miranda Kaufmann, author of Black Tudors, this enquiry-based lesson introduces students to the diversity of Tudor society and challenges common misconceptions about multicultural Britain during the sixteenth century.

Students begin by investigating why Black Tudors came to England, using historical sources, source scholarship and structured questioning to explore trade, diplomacy, exploration and migration. They then examine the wide range of occupations held by Black Tudors through an engaging dual-coding activity, discovering that they worked as musicians, servants, sailors, craftsmen, merchants and skilled workers.

Students deepen their understanding through video evidence, a Thinking Quilt challenge and differentiated case studies of five Black Tudors, including John Blanke, Henry VIII鈥檚 famous Black trumpeter. They analyse the evidence to evaluate the significance of these individuals and their contribution to Tudor society.

The lesson concludes with engaging retrieval activities, including an Odd One Out challenge and a symbol-linking plenary, enabling students to consolidate their knowledge and reflect on the importance of diversity in Tudor England.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress while developing a deeper understanding of diversity, historical significance and historical interpretation.

Fully planned and ready to teach, this lesson develops historical enquiry, source analysis, significance, interpretation and retrieval skills.

Fully editable PowerPoint
