Big Feelings: Who Am I? KS3 Emotional Well Being SEMH

Identity sits at the heart of emotional wellbeing. Before young people can understand relationships, manage emotions or build resilience, they first need opportunities to reflect on who they are and who they want to become.

This unit provides a structured introduction to self-awareness through four progressive lessons exploring identity, personal values, influences and future aspirations. Students are encouraged to think critically, discuss real-life scenarios and reflect on the choices that shape their character.

Throughout the unit, learners follow six recurring students whose stories provide relatable discussion points and reflection opportunities. Each lesson includes practical activities, “Real Talk” scenarios and a signature Big Feelings Challenge, helping students connect learning to their own lives in a thoughtful and engaging way.

The sequence builds deliberately from understanding the present self to considering the future self:

Lesson 1: Understanding Emotions & Identity
Lesson 2: What Really Matters? Understanding Values
Lesson 3: What Shapes Me? Understanding Influences
Lesson 4: Becoming the Person I Want to Be

The resource includes PowerPoint presentations, a matching student workbook that mirrors the presentation slide-by-slide, teacher guidance, assessment materials and printable supporting resources. The consistent structure allows lessons to be delivered with confidence while giving students space to think, discuss and reflect.

Rather than providing simple answers, this unit encourages meaningful conversations and helps students recognise that identity is continually developing through values, experiences, relationships and everyday choices. It provides a strong foundation for the rest of the Big Feelings curriculum.
