Introduce students to the fascinating life and achievements of Beatrix Potter through an engaging biography research activity designed for young learners.

Students will follow Beatrix鈥檚 journey from her childhood in Victorian London, where she developed a deep fascination with animals, drawing and the natural world, to becoming one of the world鈥檚 best-known children鈥檚 authors and illustrators.

The resource explores a lesser-known side of Beatrix Potter鈥檚 life as a naturalist and scientific illustrator. Students will discover how she studied fungi, used microscopes, created detailed scientific drawings and submitted a paper about fungal spores to the Linnean Society before beginning her famous writing career.

Students will also learn how the character Peter Rabbit first appeared in an illustrated letter Beatrix wrote to a child in 1893. After initially printing the story herself, The Tale of Peter Rabbit was commercially published in 1902 and became a great success, launching a remarkable series of illustrated animal stories.

The biography follows Beatrix鈥檚 move towards a new life in the Lake District, including her purchase of Hill Top Farm in 1905 using profits from her books. Students will learn how she became a farmer, Herdwick sheep breeder and passionate conservationist who purchased land to help protect the landscapes she loved.
