This lesson assesses the key factors that enabled William the Conqueror to win the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Students investigate how a combination of leadership, tactics, luck and mistakes contributed to William鈥檚 victory and consider how easily the outcome could have been very different.

Students begin with an interactive starter activity where they identify who said or did what during the battle, helping to build contextual understanding and historical recall.

They then complete a card sort task, organising a range of factors into categories and making links between them to embed higher-order thinking and analytical skills.

The lesson culminates in a differentiated narrative account activity in which students explain the events of the battle in chronological order. Writing frames, prompts and exam guidance are included to support students in producing a high-quality response and developing GCSE-style historical writing skills.

A true or false plenary quiz provides a quick and effective check of understanding while reinforcing the key learning from the lesson.

What was significant about the Black Death and its effect on the population of Britain and Europe and how dangerous and unhygienic were Medieval towns? These skills are addressed in each of the lessons and allow students to be able to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends and be able to create their own structured accounts and written narratives. All the lessons are enquiry based with a key question using a lightbulb posed at the start and revisited at the end to show the progression in learning. They are differentiated and come with suggested teaching and learning strategies and link to the latest interpretations of the conquest from the BBC and other sources.
