Arthur was a British footballer of mixed heritage.His father, Henry Wharton was grenadian missionary of Scottish and West African descent. His mother, Annie Florence Egyriba was a member of the Fante Ghanaian Royalty. He was born in Jamestown, Gold Coast, in 1865.
He moved to England aged 19 to train as Methodist missionary but he soon abandoned this in favour of football

He was an all-round sportsman - ran 10 seconds for 100 yards and was also a cyclist and cricketer
He played as goalkeeper but occasionally featured as a winger for 9 English football clubs. His first club was Darlington where he played as an amateur. He turned professional when he joined Rotherham Town in 1889.

In 2020 a mural was unveiled in Darlington on Arthur Wharton’s 155 th anniversary.
