Build spoken Arabic sentences about food and drink with Sentence Ladder, a printable board game for beginners with 80 picture cards and a 40-square ladder board.

Included files

This resource contains a 28-page Food & Drink Pack PDF, including the updated one-page How to Play instructions, and a separate two-page A3 board PDF with the instruction sheet. The pack includes 80 picture cards (20 in each of four colours), printable card backs, a game board, a colour-coded card mat, teacher guidance and four reference sheets. Cards use Arabic with pictures; reference sheets provide Arabic, transliteration and English.

Learning focus

Practise food and drink vocabulary, pronouns, demonstratives, questions, describing words, verb forms and connectors through meaningful spoken sentences. Students choose appropriate forms and may consult reference sheets after drawing. Vocabulary includes bread, rice, chicken, fish, meat and eggs. The guide models eating bread and cheese.

Four card colours

Purple: pronouns, demonstratives, question words and people. Red: nouns, places and starred describing words. Green: verbs and forms to choose from. Yellow: prepositions, connectors and other useful expressions. Colour coding supports sentence building without requiring grammatical terminology.

How to play: updated standard rules

Draw four cards, one of each colour. Build and say a meaningful Arabic sentence using at least two cards. A correct two-card sentence earns one space; three cards earn two spaces; four or more earn three spaces. A correctly used starred red card earns one extra space. Count cards, not individual Arabic words.

If unable to make a sentence, draw four more cards, one of each colour, and try with eight cards. If still stuck, pass without moving. Discard drawn cards into their matching colour piles after each turn; shuffle and reuse each discard pile when its draw pile runs out.

Land at the bottom of a ladder to climb it. On a challenge square, complete an additional language task: success earns two spaces; otherwise stay. Players never move backwards. The first to reach or pass square 40 wins. Players may add the Arabic definite article to a suitable noun without another card if the sentence remains grammatical.

IMPORTANT: Follow the updated How to Play sheet. The minimum remains two cards throughout. Extra level-up and dialogue symbols printed on some boards are not used in this standard version.

Use and preparation

Suitable for supported small-group speaking practice, vocabulary revision, tutoring and home learning. The teacher guide suggests 2–3 players, or four with a time limit. Print card fronts and backs double-sided, flip on the long edge at actual size, and cut along dashed lines. Print the board and references single-sided; use the A3 board for a larger surface. The pack is designed for A4 and US Letter printing. Supply playing pieces and support learners in checking their sentences.
