Bring the world of 1920s Chicago to life with this fun and thought-provoking card sort activity, designed to help students evaluate whether Al Capone was truly a ruthless gangster or, as he claimed, merely a businessman giving the people what they wanted.

Students will analyse and sort a range of facts, events, and quotations from Capone鈥檚 life to weigh up both sides of the argument, before reaching their own supported judgement. This interactive task encourages debate, critical thinking, and source analysis 鈥 perfect for engaging learners of all abilities.

The activity is supported by a PowerPoint presentation that includes clear lesson aims, objectives and differentiated outcomes, as well as a starter activity, concise background information, and guidance on how to introduce and structure the card sort. A link to a recommended YouTube documentary clip (first 25 minutes) is also provided to help bring the story of Capone and Prohibition to life.

This resource works well as a stand-alone lesson or as part of a wider unit on Prohibition and organised crime in 1920s America. It complements most mainstream GCSE History specifications, including AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, and is also suitable for Key Stage 3 classes exploring the interwar period.
