Dear Reader,

This unit is a six-lesson sequence(7 with revision) focusing on the problems William of Normandy faced after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

All lessons follow the same clear, modelled structure, ensuring students always understand where they are in their learning and what is expected of them. Assessment is built into every lesson through interactive tasks, allowing for constant checking of understanding and effective progress tracking.

Across the unit, students move chronologically and thematically through William’s main challenges. The lessons cover the immediate problems William faced after Hastings, the introduction of the Feudal System, rebellions against Norman rule, the Domesday Book, and the role of castles in controlling England, before concluding with a structured assessment lesson that brings the whole unit together.

Each lesson includes three tasks differentiated by level of difficulty. The first two tasks are designed for group or class assessment, encouraging discussion and collaborative learning, while the final task is always an individual written response, carefully aligned to the GCSE writing framework. This structure allows you to circulate, support pupils one-to-one, and target writing skills effectively.

Homework activities, revision lesson and assessment are all included, and the unit is fully prepared as a slideshow, making it ready to teach with minimal preparation.
