A PPT which is part of a unit designed to teach students how to engage with a range of written and visual texts. This is the first lesson (at the end of Term 1) and so is about general topics (including those previously examined).

This lesson covers:
• An explanation of the CIA examination and its criteria
• Some of the previous topics and stimulus (visuals)
• An overview of skills needed for the CIA exam
• Example Question 1 (extended response)
• Example Question 2 (short response in 4 parts)
• Process 1: summarising the stimulus
• Process 2: identifying the purpose of the text, its target audience and how they are being positioned
• Process 3: finding representations in a stimulus text (aka points of view). Looking at a few visual stimulus to do so.
• Fun ending: Looking at how teenagers are represented in texts including trailers for a TV show and music videos.

Context: A lesson designed for use in a 12 Essential English classroom in Queensland, Australia as part of Unit 3 “Language the Influences.” I have a mixed ability class (including QCIA learners). This unit culminates in a common internal assessment (CIA) that is a short-response examination. Students respond to media texts by explaining representations within them and producing a range of texts of their own.
