A PPT which is part of a unit designed to teach students how to engage with a range of written and visual texts.

Warm up: What does AI (Chat GPT) know about you?

Learning Intent: We will be looking at a transcript of a talkback radio show as an example of a written text (for Q1) of CIA.

Explicit Teaching:

  • What is a talkback radio show?
  • Examples: Conversations and Hack (JJJ).
  • How are talkback radio shows typically structured?
  • Amusing video (beer ad featuring talkback radio show concept).
  • Language features we might encounter (reminders). No definitions as these should have been taught earlier in the unit.

Context for stimulus: Based on ABC’s ‘Conversations’ program. (Written in the style with a couple of anchors and people calling in).

Provide a Q for students to respond to and a graphic organiser for planning. Give students print out / electronic copy of transcript.

Students to read and annotate stimulus and then respond in 2 x paragraphs.

Also included: a simplified transcript for QCIA learners.

Context: A lesson designed for use in a 12 Essential English classroom in Queensland, Australia as part of Unit 3 “Language the Influences.” I have a mixed ability class (including QCIA learners).
