Unit Overview:

This unit begins with an engaging ‘hook’ activity where the class listen carefully to clues describing a hidden cuddly toy. The children will then be introduced to the text Dogger by Shirley Hughes. Shared reading lessons will encourage children to discuss the story, make simple predictions and link events from the text to their own experiences. Children will explore descriptive vocabulary linked to toys and feelings, whilst developing spoken language through partner talk, oral rehearsal and discussion activities. As the story progresses, children will be taught to make simple inferences about how Dave feels when Dogger is lost, using evidence from the illustrations and events in the story. The class will sequence the main events from the story using storyboards, pictures and temporal language to retell the narrative in the correct order. The children will then explore the purpose and features of a ‘LOST’ poster, identifying key elements such as a bold title, questions, descriptions and help sentences. Through shared planning and teacher modelling, children will gather ideas and rehearse sentences to prepare for writing. Shared writing lessons will model the drafting and editing process, whilst reinforcing key grammar and punctuation skills taught throughout the unit, including capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and adjectives. The unit will conclude with children publishing and presenting their own ‘LOST’ posters.
