Job overview

Intellectual ambition and academic scholarship lie at the heart of a King鈥檚 education, and we aim for every King鈥檚 pupil to be inspired to achieve their full academic potential.

In line with this aim, each year the school employs a small number of graduates, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in a part-time capacity as part of our academic enrichment programme.

These roles, called King鈥檚 Rossetti Academics, are in honour of Dante Gabriel Rossetti who attended King鈥檚 from 1837-1841. Rossetti is widely known as one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century British art and a renowned poet. He is also a very important inspirational figure within the academic enrichment programme at King鈥檚: academic scholarships in the sixth form are named in his honour, Rossetti Day is an exciting off-curriculum day of inter-disciplinary workshops for the lower sixth, and Rossetti Society comprises as series of lectures on areas of literary interest, culminating in an annual dinner organised by the English department.

The purpose of the King鈥檚 Rossetti Academics programme is to inspire our pupils in their academic studies by increasing their access to current, intellectually stimulating and specialist knowledge.

We are currently inviting graduates, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers specialising in Physics & Engineering to apply to become a King鈥檚 Rossetti Academic.

The King鈥檚 Rossetti Academic (Physics & Engineering) will work to support curricular and co-curricular activities relating to Physics & Engineering, as well as support pupils seeking tomake successful higher education applications in Physics & Engineering and related subjects.

The precise nature of the role will be shaped in accordance with school needs to fit the strengths of the candidate(s) appointed, and we hope, too, that the appointed candidate will relish the opportunity to shape and extend our provision further.

Core responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Supplementing current departmental support to pupils with university applications, including:

  • Running subject extension sessions

  • Providing feedback on draft personal statements

  • Preparing pupils for admissions tests

  • Conducting mock interviews

  • Providing strategic advice on university applications

  • Supporting the creation and delivery of academic enrichment resources, talks and activities within both the curriculum and co-curriculum

  • Supervising pupils in the research, writing and delivery of individual projects, such as King鈥檚 Essays

  • Delivering pupil workshops as part of Rossetti Day in January and Curiosity Day in June

  • Providing occasional support for our partnership and international schools

We expect employment to typically be 8 hours per week across one or two days, and so fit well alongside current research or study commitments.

  • A genuine interest in Physics & Engineering as a contemporary academic discipline; this may be as a current doctoral or post-doctoral researcher

  • An ability to work well with others, and to demonstrate initiative

  • Excellent communication, organisation and listening skills

  • A desire to enrich the intellectual experience of pupils beyond the exam specifications, and to inspire and support pupils to flourish and reach their academic potential

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the application process for the most competitive degree courses in the relevant subject area, and the ability and willingness to support pupils with their preparations for admissions tests and interviews

  • Prior experience working in a secondary school environment

  • A willingness to contribute to the school鈥檚 partnerships programme, for instance supporting our partnership with Harris Academy Wimbledon sixth form and/or our international schools programme

  • A willingness to contribute to the school鈥檚 wider academic enrichment programme

King鈥檚 is one of the most successful schools in the world, and our community is a special place to teach, work and learn. Educating almost 1,500 pupils, we currently welcome boys aged 7-18 and girls aged 16-18, and we are excited to be extending co-education throughout the King鈥檚 community from 2029. Our pupils are curious, creative and eager to learn, and the dedication, expertise, and care of our staff lie at the foundation of everything we do. Located in a peaceful part of London, opposite 1,140 acres of countryside offered by Wimbledon and Putney Commons, within minutes of central London and just a short walk from Wimbledon Village and the home of lawn tennis, we are fortunate to enjoy a green and well-resourced campus.

Our school was founded in 1829 by Royal Charter as the junior department of the university, King鈥檚 College London, and as such, intellectual aspiration and a progressive spirit are our heritage. Today, we offer an education of the whole person, in Mind, Spirit and Heart, the enduring ethos of our foundation. Our guiding mission is to look outwards, to the world beyond school, and to life at 25: we look to the lives we are preparing our young people to lead, so that when the time comes, they are ready to forge the pathway they choose, and to make a purposeful impact in the world.

We aim for each of our pupils to enjoy an exhilarating adventure of learning and to pursue academic excellence within a fun, caring, welcoming environment. Academic outcomes at A level, IB and GCSE consistently place King鈥檚 amongst the very top schools nationally and globally, with over half of A level and IB grades at A* or equivalent last summer.

Supporting our pupils to grow strong in spirit, in the shared values and qualities of character that will ground them, is equally important at King鈥檚. Kindness, respect and support for one another, a broad-minded outlook and a commitment to ensuring that ours is a community where each individual feels that they can belong, are central to our ethos. Likewise, we share a deep commitment to the co-curriculum, which enables our pupils to develop broad skills and resilience as well as to discover lifelong passions through clubs and societies, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, sport, the arts, and community partnerships.

The next few years represent an exciting time for King鈥檚 as we embark upon the next chapter of the school鈥檚 development and prepare to enter our third century in 2029. Over the coming decade, we are extending co-education throughout King鈥檚 so that any young person will have the opportunity to flourish here. With the relocation of our Junior School to a new world-class campus on The Downs, we plan to transform our main campus over the coming years, further enhancing our facilities to extend the opportunities on offer to our pupils and communities. Likewise, as the world changes around us, we are constantly considering how we can best enable our pupils to create their futures. We hope you consider joining us for this adventure.
